Name: Sudd
Location: South Sudan
The Sudd is a vast swamp in South Sudan, formed by the White Nile's Baḥr al-Jabal section. The Arabic word sudd is derived from sadd (سد), meaning "barrier" or "obstruction". The term "the sudd" has come to refer to any large solid floating vegetation island or mat. The area which the swamp covers is one of the world's largest wetlands and the largest freshwater wetland in the Nile basin.

For many years the swamp, and especially its thicket of vegetation, proved an impenetrable barrier to navigation along the Nile. The ancient Egyptians failed to penetrate the Sudd and reach the areas south of it. In AD 61, a party of Roman soldiers sent by the Emperor Nero proceeded up the White Nile but were not able to get beyond the Sudd, which marked the limit of Roman penetration into equatorial Africa. For the same reasons in later times the search for the source of the Nile was particularly difficult; it eventually involved overland expeditions from the central African coast, so as to avoid having to travel through the Sudd.

In 2019 a team of climate scientists led by the UK's Edinburgh University published a study in the Journal of Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, that suggested increased water flows into the Sudd may be partly causing up to a third of the global rise in atmospheric methane levels over the previous decade.

Name: Boma National Park
Location: South Sudan
Boma National Park is a protected area in eastern South Sudan near the Ethiopian border. It was established in 1977 and covers 8,800 sq mi of grasslands and floodplains.

The park is an important refuge for white-eared kob, tiang, and Mongalla gazelle. Other large mammals are buffalo, elephant, African leopard, Nubian giraffe, oryx, hartebeest, Northeast African cheetah, common eland, Lelwel hartebeest, maneless zebra, waterbuck, Grant's gazelle, Lesser kudu, bongo, Giant eland, and Nile lechwe. It is also an important bird area; avifauna includes Ruppell's vulture and the black-chested snake eagle. The neighboring Gambela National Park in Ethiopia protects similar species. Since 2005, the protected area is considered a lion conservation unit together with Gambella National Park.

The most prominent species of the Boma National Park is the white-eared kob antelope. A UNEP study reports that the white-eared kob is found mostly to the east of Nile River in South Sudan within the clay plains and wetlands; though occurring in substantial numbers in the Boma National Park, it is reported to be found more outside the protected area.

Name: Bandingilo National Park
Location: South Sudan
The Bandingilo National Park is located in South Sudan's Equatoria region and was established in 1992. Situated in a wooded area near the White Nile River, it is over 3,900 sq mi in size.

Earth's second-largest annual animal migration (largest is the Serengeti migration), involving multiple species of antelope including reedbuck, tiang, and white-eared kob, takes place in the park, which is also home to iconic African megafauna like the Nubian giraffe. It also contains large marshlands stretching up into Jonglei state. Predators like the African wild dogs, cheetahs, caracals, lions and spotted hyenas are also living in the national park. The park supports large bird populations. Though a major wildlife preserve, the park lies within a Total oil concession, potentially exposing it to surveying and drilling.

On 6 July 2011, three days before South Sudan formally seceded from Sudan, an administrative headquarters was officially opened at a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Central Equatoria Governor Clement Wani and USAID's Sudan director William Hammink. Due to South Sudan's intense poverty and a lack of facilities, something the new administrative center is part of plans to alleviate, Bandingilo is one of the least touristed national parks in the world.

The currency of the country is the South Sudanese pound (ISO currency code: SSP). It is divided into 100 piasters. The official rate or “bank exchange rate” (above) is what you would see on sites like Oanda and mataf.net. However, the black market exchange for dollars is twice than this.

You can withdraw money with a Mastercard or Visa card at any of the Ecobank or Equity banks ATMs in South Sudan.

EAT:

Da Vinci – This is a restaurant by the Nile River. There is a friendly monkey and lots of lizards zooming through. They also serve crocodile meat.

Lily’s – They serve oriental food and you can even buy a shake. This is just adjacent to their grocery. You can use USD to buy groceries and they will give you SSP as change., black market rate.

Nimule – Restaurant by the swimming pool.

DRINK:

In the towns of South Sudan such as Rumbek and Juba, Kenyan and Ugandan beers are starting to appear in bars at inflated cross-border prices. In Renk, you can even buy Red Horse, a Filipino beer!

Fresh fruit juices are available throughout Sudan. One of the local juices is “aradeab”(tamarind).

The cloves-flavoured tea (chai) is very good. Outside the capital, you’ll pay usually 10 SSP for one cup. Also the ginger-flavoured coffee is to be tried. In Renk, one cup of this is 100SSP. Both are very sweet, so if you don’t want sugar or you want it separately, mention this when you order.
