Name: St. Elizabeth’s Cathedral
Location: Malabo, Equatorial Guinea

St. Elizabeth's Cathedral (Spanish: Catedral de Santa Isabel de Malabo or Catedral de Malabo) is a Roman Catholic cathedral located on Independencia Avenue (Avenida de la Independencia) in the city of Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea, home of the Archdiocese of Malabo. It is considered the largest Christian church in the nation. It was named after St. Elizabeth of Hungary.

Its construction began in 1897 with donations from parishioners, commercial companies and the Spanish government, for it was one of its colonies. The architect of the monument was Luis Segarra Llairadó, and was inaugurated in 1916.

It is built in a neogothic style that emphasizes its façade, flanked by two 40 meter high towers, and a nave with two aisles.

Name: Pico Basilé
Location: Bioko, Equatorial Guinea

Pico Basilé (formerly Pico de Santa Isabel), located on the island of Bioko, is the tallest mountain of Equatorial Guinea. With an altitude of 9,878 ft (3,011 m), it is the summit of the largest and highest of three overlapping basaltic shield volcanoes which form the island. From the summit, Mt. Cameroon can be seen to the northeast. Pico Basilé lies close to the city of Malabo. The very top is used as a broadcast transmitting station for RTVGE (Radio Television Guinea Ecuatorial) and microwave relay station for various communication networks.

The peak forms a part of Pico Basilé National Park, created in April 2000. The boundaries of Bioko Norte and Sur runs near the summit.

Bioko was formed along the Cameroon line, a major northeast-trending geologic fault that runs from the Atlantic Ocean into Cameroon. This line includes other volcanic islands in the Gulf of Guinea such as Annobón, Príncipe and São Tomé, along with the massive stratovolcano of Mount Cameroon. Unlike the three other islands which are extinct volcanoes, its last eruption occurred in 1923.

Name: Bata
Location: Litoral province, Equatorial Guinea

Bata is a port city in the Litoral province of Equatorial Guinea. With a 2005 estimated population of 173,046, it is the largest city in Equatorial Guinea. It lies on the Atlantic Ocean coast of Río Muni. Bata was formerly capital of Equatorial Guinea and is a transport hub and port, from which ferries sail to Malabo and Douala, while fliers can land at Bata Airport. Bata is also known for its nightlife and market.

Bata has one of the deepest seaports in the region. Despite this, Bata has no natural harbor and a jetty was built to facilitate offshore handling of ships' cargoes. The principal exports are timber and coffee. The international airport at Bata Airport has flights to several cities, including the capital, Malabo and to Libreville in Gabon. Bata, like Malabo, contains some of the country's best hotels including the Hotel Panafrica, overlooking the beach.

After the anti-Spanish riots of 1968, the European population declined in Bata, and severe economic stagnation affected Bata in the 1970s and early 1980s. The recent oil boom of the country in the late 1980s and 1990s has boosted the development of the city.

MONEY EXCHANGE

The currency of the country is the Central African CFA franc, denoted FCFA (ISO currency code: XAF). It’s also used by five other Central African countries. It is interchangeable at par with the West African CFA franc (XOF), which is used by six countries. Both currencies are fixed at a rate of 1 euro = 655.957 CFA francs.

You can withdraw money with a Mastercard or Visa card at any Ecobank ATM in Equatorial Guinea.

EAT:

There are several good places to go to eat particularly in Malabo. The coffee shop at Hotel Sofitel (across from the Cathedral along the north coast) offers French cuisine. Hotel Bahia’s main restaurant is also a favourite destination for locals and expats. For pizza and pasta, the Pizza Place is the best place in town. For Asian cuisine, Restaurante Bantu offers authentic Chinese cuisine. For Moroccan and other European food, try La Luna. Try Equatorial Guinean cuisine such a smoked beef with a black pepper. There is also a roast duck with cheese and onion leaf.

DRINK:

Ebebiyin is known for its many bars. They drink a lot of wine. Locally produced beer, Guineana is very good.

ACCOMMODATION

Due to the influx of foreign workers and foreign investment in Malabo and on the continent, there is an ample choice of hotels.
